Unlocking Value from First-Party Data: Applicable Insights from Walmart Data Ventures’ Inspire Event
In the ever-evolving retail landscape, the ability to harness data effectively can truly set retailers and brands apart. At their recent Inspire event in Northwest Arkansas, Walmart Data Ventures showcased how retailers can transform their first-party data into powerful insights that drive sales and enhance retail media income. With a reported increase in participation and engagement from both large and small Walmart brand suppliers, the event highlighted the immense potential that lies within the actionable insights of first-party data that has applications for retailers around the world.
Discovering New Insights
During the Inspire event, more than 1200 attendees had the opportunity to hear from leaders at both Walmart and their Data Ventures unit, along with case studies from suppliers of varying sizes and across product categories. These presentations revealed new ways to analyze granular data, such as sales by store type, purchase and delivery channel, time of day, etc., emphasizing how suppliers can leverage insights to gain a competitive edge. As the retail environment becomes increasingly complex, the ability to draw actionable conclusions from data has never been more critical, both for retailers and consumer brands. Insights on consumer interests broadly across the US market, local and regional preferences, store-specific product assortments, and category management optimization are just some of the potential value “unlocks” from deeper data analysis.
Retail Media Insights Activation
One of the most exciting announcements from the event was the rollout of Walmart Luminate Insights Activation for Walmart Connect, Walmart’s retail media advertising platform. After a successful beta launch, this self-serve, automated solution is now available to all Walmart Luminate Charter paid subscribers. By streamlining the process from insights to marketing strategy action planning, this tool allows suppliers to seamlessly apply Walmart Luminate insights to optimize their digital advertising campaigns on Walmart.com. This means that suppliers can now make data-driven decisions more quickly and effectively, ultimately driving growth for themselves and for the retailer as well.
From “Luminate” to “Scintilla”
Founded by Walmart in 2021, Walmart Data Ventures was conceived to unlock the full potential of Walmart’s first-party data and generate additional revenue streams for Walmart. A significant part of this journey involves the announced rebranding of its integrated insights ecosystem from Walmart Luminate to “Scintilla” starting in February of next year. The name “Scintilla”, meaning ‘spark’ in Latin, embodies the concept that even the smallest insight can ignite powerful business decisions. This evolution not only reflects Walmart’s legacy of sharing data with its suppliers but also positions it for future expansion across new markets and banners, already having launched its new product suite in Mexico and set to debut in Canada this fall.

Applications for your Retail Business
Walmart Data Ventures’ Inspire event illuminated the path for other retailers seeking to convert first-party data into valuable insights as well as new revenue streams.
As the retail landscape continues to shift to a more intentional omnichannel focus, the ability to harness data effectively will be a game changer for retailers of all sizes. One key lesson from Walmart’s approach is the elimination of customer data “silos” common in retailers around the world. A legacy of the early decades of omnichannel retail, most retailers continue to capture consumers’ online browse & purchase data separately from their in-store purchase data. Doing so limits the ability to capture the full picture of a modern consumer’s full path to purchase across digital and physical touchpoints, as well as limiting the effectiveness of personalization technology that underpins so many retailers’ conversion-driving merchandising and marketing efforts. In addition, consumer data silos also limit the effectiveness of retail media spending, as brand marketers are less likely to see compelling returns on their ad spend on a retailer’s platform without access to a unified view of how online ads complemented by emerging in-store digital media, ultimately results in a purchase at the retailer.
By adopting innovative solutions and embracing a data-driven approach, retailers can leverage Walmart’s example to unlock new growth opportunities, enhance their omnichannel marketing strategies, and ultimately drive top-line sales and bottom-line retail media income.
