Three Strategic Lessons from GELF NYC’s Global Experts Workshop
What happens when you gather several dozen senior executives with decades of international experience? The answer is simple: candid conversations, practical ideas, and new perspectives on navigating one of the most challenging periods global commerce has faced in years. The GELF NYC Global Experts Workshop, held in July, co-hosted by our Community Partner IDA Ireland, was a resounding success. The GELF community asked us to dive deeper into key topics relevant to global growth, and this workshop format proved to be a great vehicle for senior leaders to share insights, programs and solutions.
After a year marked by uncertainty, many organizations are shifting from defensive planning back to measured growth. The conversations in New York reflected renewed optimism—but also a more disciplined approach to international expansion. This workshop, an “advanced track” for established global brands and retailers, had participant goals of expanding their peer network and practical, profit-focused workshop takeaway ideas to bring back to their respective teams. Our workshop focused on two primary topics: managing brand integrity with international partners, and margin or profitability drivers in today’s environment.
Here are my takeaways from our Global Ecommerce Leaders Forum (GELF) NYC Global Experts Workshop. Executive summary and detailed reports from the workshop breakout discussions are available on request:
- IRL matters. When experienced operators are in the same room, conversations move quickly beyond theory. Real-world challenges are debated openly, practical solutions emerge, and long-term business relationships deepen. In an era dominated by virtual meetings, there is still no substitute for face-to-face collaboration. It was refreshing to hear from senior leaders who are pursuing greater global responsibilities, and what they can learn from global veterans.
- Global success depends on local execution to be a best-in-class global brand and retailer. Partners are no longer just distributors – they’re an extension of the brand. Our discussions on managing brand integrity with local ecosystem partners only highlights how crucial global and local partners are to your business. Two of the primary themes from these discussions concluded the importance of clearly communicating the brand guide – and to avoid policing or penalizing partners; and to arm local markets and partners to sell your products.
- Equally important in today’s challenging macro environment, is understanding and pursuing the right margin and profitability drivers, another key workshop topic. With investment horizons narrowing, and margin opportunities constantly evolving, margin improvement is increasingly being driven by ecosystem design rather than isolated cost reductions. Participants discussed how localized inventory, optimized reverse logistics, tariff recovery, AI-enabled merchandising, and physical stores functioning as omnichannel fulfillment hubs all contribute to stronger profitability.
Thank you to IDA Ireland for being a fantastic Community Partner and hosting our group in their event space overlooking Park Avenue. And a special thanks to our Sponsors, Swap Commerce and ePost Global, both were integral contributors to the workshop. The conversations don’t end when the workshop concludes. They continue across the GELF community as leaders compare approaches, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another. As we plan our next gathering, we’d love to hear which international commerce challenges deserve deeper discussion.
