Retail Isn’t Evolving, It’s Being Rewritten
Retail is changing faster than ever, and the latest Retail Innovations 2026 report from McMillanDoolittle and the Ebeltoft Group identifies where the industry is headed next. In a conversation with Scott Benedict on The Digital Front Door, McMillanDoolittle’s Mara Devitt explains that today’s most innovative retailers are moving beyond operational excellence by reflecting customer values, reducing friction, and creating stronger emotional connections:
- Retailers are striving to build a better world by moving beyond marketing into the business model itself. In the Netherlands, Droppie makes recycling feel like a retail experience—easy, rewarding, even enjoyable. In Poland, Rebread turns unsold bread into entirely new products, like soda. Sustainability has shifted from a secondary initiative to the main priority and the products themselves.
- Easy journeys are redefining convenience. Think AI-powered fitting rooms at H&M that recommend outfits in real time, or smart supermarkets in Singapore that guide shoppers effortlessly. The goal isn’t just speed, but reducing the mental effort of shopping altogether.
- Physical stores are becoming engaging destinations The best examples create reasons to visit beyond transactions, build memories, and bring brands to life in ways digital channels cannot. Area 15 blends nightlife, entertainment, food, retail, and immersive experiences together in a constantly evolving environment, giving customers a reason to visit again and again.
The key takeaway for retailers is not to copy what’s working globally but understand why it works and how to translate those insights into experiences that feel local, human, and relevant for their customers.
