Neil Z. Stern specializes in strategic planning and the development of new retail concepts. Neil joined the firm in 1986 and became a Partner in 1990. He prides himself on long-standing relationships and repeat engagements with valued clients, many extending over five to ten years.
During his career at McMillanDoolittle, Neil has developed strategies and new concepts for a diverse variety of clients across the retail industry. Key clients have included an impressive mix of both large and small retailers, including Sears, Target, Wawa, Harris Teeter, Radio Shack, Mall of America, McDonald’s Corporation, Lenox, Land’s End, Publix, ChevronTexaco, Procter & Gamble, Safeway and WinnDixie. Neil’s work has also extended to numerous International engagements, working for Carrefour, Coca Cola Europe, Coop Italia, EMart, Hagkaup (Iceland) and Sonae (Portugal).
Along with his consulting work, Neil is also recognized as a key thought leader in the retail arena. He is editor of McMillanDoolittle’s Retail Watch newsletter, which is widely regarded as the premier publication on new concepts and trends. Neil is a sought-after speaker concerning food and retail trends both in the U.S. and Internationally. He has given dozens of presentations at conferences, internal company meetings and key industry trade groups.
Neil has been named to Crain’s Chicago Business 40 under 40 list of prominent Chicago business leaders and was also named in 2002 as one of the 40 Rising Stars in Retailing by Chain Store Age. John C. Wiley & Sons published his first book, Winning At Retail in 2004, and more recently, Greentailing in 2008.
Neil is an honors graduate of Columbia University and has attended Northwestern’s Kellogg MBA program.
